Holy Habits – Hearing from God (John 10)

John 10:1

1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.

 John 10:2

2 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep.

 John 10:3

3 “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

 John 10:4

4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.

 John 10:5

5 “A stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

 John 10:16

16 “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd

 John 10:27

27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;

 Central Truth: Jesus still speaks. 

Application – How do we listen to Jesus? 

Recognize the wolf’s howl from the shepherd’s call. 

Jesus unites.  The wolf divides. 

Jesus speaks hope.  Satan speaks despair. 

Jesus convicts.  Satan condemns. 

Jesus defends.  Satan accuses.

 4 Categories of Communication 

1. The Promised Land 

Seek His voice from the Scriptures.  

Seek His voice from the Spirit.  

Seek His voice from the saints. 

2. The Twilight Zone: Only hearing God speak through the Spirit. 

3. The Desert. Believing that God only speaks through the Scriptures. 

4. The Cult. Just listening to other people.
