2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,James 1:3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.James 1:4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing
- Where do we get it?
- Joy comes from Jesus. Joy is given to us by the Holy Spirit:
Romans 14:17
17 For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
John 15:11
11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
- Application – How do we find more joy?
Central Truth: Lasting joy comes from rejoicing in the person of Jesus and the promise of eternal life.
- Rejoice in a person.
Philippians 4:4
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
Joy is more about WHO than WHAT.
Joy flourishes in community. It withers in isolation.
The joy you get from a WHAT is IMMEDIATE and BRIEF.
The joy you get from a WHO is GRADUAL and LASTING.
Philippians 4:5
5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.
- Rejoice in a promise.
Luke 10:20
20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
4 Common Joy Thieves…
- Discontentment – Envying the circumstances of others.
- Bitterness – Holding unforgiveness toward others.
- Self-pity – Dwelling on your misfortunes, bad breaks.
- Negativity – Complaining about your circumstances.
Habakkuk 3:17
17 Though the fig tree should not blossom
And there be no fruit on the vines,
Though the yield of the olive should fail
And the fields produce no food,
Though the flock should be cut off from the fold
And there be no cattle in the stalls,
Habakkuk 3:18
18 Yet I will exult in the Lord,
I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
Habakkuk 3:19
19 The Lord God is my strength,
And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet,
And makes me walk on my high places.
